Frequently asked
- What is the Pocket Confidence Scale?
- The Pocket Confidence Scale is a four-tier rating system used by The Pocket Dress to communicate how trustworthy a dress's pocket claim is. Every dress in our index is rated on the scale, with the evidence shown alongside the rating. The four tiers, from highest to lowest, are: Phone-Fit Verified, Pocket Verified, Pocket Likely, and Pocket Mentioned.
- What does Phone-Fit Verified mean?
- Phone-Fit Verified is the highest tier on our scale. It means we have explicit evidence — photographs, customer reports, or a direct test from our team — that the pocket fits a modern smartphone (an iPhone 15 Pro or comparable Android device) without bulging, pulling the seam, or causing the phone to slip out. It is the only tier that guarantees phone usability.
- What does Pocket Verified mean?
- Pocket Verified is our second-highest tier. It means multiple customer reviews confirm the pockets are functional and secure, or our editorial team has confirmed the pockets directly. Verified pockets reliably hold small-to-medium essentials — a wallet, a paperback book, a small water bottle — but are not guaranteed to fit a modern smartphone.
- What does Pocket Likely mean?
- Pocket Likely means pockets are visible in the retailer's product photography or referenced consistently across multiple customer reviews, but we have not personally verified them. They are likely functional for small essentials like keys, cards, lipstick, or loose change.
- What does Pocket Mentioned mean?
- Pocket Mentioned is our lowest evidence tier. It means the retailer's product description claims the dress has pockets, but we have not seen photographic or review-based evidence yet. The pockets exist according to the retailer; their depth, security, and usability are unverified.
- How does The Pocket Dress verify a pocket?
- Our editorial team reviews each candidate dress in three stages. First, we read the retailer's product description for any pocket mention. Second, we examine all available product photography for visible pocket openings, side seams, or in-pocket props. Third, we read customer reviews for first-hand pocket reports. A dress is only rated Verified or Phone-Fit Verified when reviews or our own checks corroborate the pocket's function.
- Are pocket ratings influenced by affiliate commissions?
- No. Pocket Confidence ratings are determined independently of any commercial relationship. We do earn affiliate commissions on outbound retailer links, but a partnership with an advertiser does not raise a dress's rating. Full disclosure is published at /affiliate-disclosure.
- Why does The Pocket Dress only show four tiers?
- Four tiers reflect the four meaningfully different states of evidence we can verify: claimed but unseen, photographed, confirmed by humans, and confirmed for phone fit. More granularity would imply precision we cannot deliver; fewer tiers would collapse important distinctions.
- What disqualifies a dress from being listed?
- Dresses with no pocket evidence whatsoever are not listed in our index. We would rather show a smaller catalog of dresses you can trust than a larger one of maybes. Dresses where the pocket claim turns out to be decorative — a sewn-shut slit, a non-functional flap — are removed when discovered.
